About me

Short Bio

--  I am Full Professor at the Faculty of Exact Sciences and Engineering (FCEE), University of Madeira, Portugal. I am an integrated member of the NOVA Laboratory for Computer Science and Informatics (NOVA LINCS) and currently serve as Head of the Department of Informatics Engineering and Interactive Media Design.

--  I obtained my degree in Computer Science (Licenciado) from the University of Buenos Aires (1991), a PhD in Computer Science (1999), a Habilitation in Informatics Engineering (Agregação) from the University of Madeira (2008), and a PhD in Philosophy from the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Sweden (2011).

--  My research interests lie in Artificial Intelligence, Knowledge Representation and Reasoning, Belief Revision, and Non-Monotonic Logics. I have been working on Belief Revision (Logic of Theory Change) since 1988, focusing on how intelligent systems integrate and revise information. My work has contributed to the development of formal models of belief change, particularly non-prioritised belief change, and more recently to applications in adaptive systems, profile dynamics, neurorehabilitation, and energy poverty policy.

--  I am co-author of the books Belief Change: Introduction and Overview (Springer, 2018) and Non-Prioritised Belief Change (Springer, 2026). I have published more than 45 peer-reviewed journal articles and more than 45 refereed international conference papers, including contributions to leading venues such as Artificial Intelligence, Journal of Artificial Intelligence Research, ACM Transactions on Computational Logic, Journal of Symbolic Logic, and Journal of Philosophical Logic, as well as top-tier conferences such as AAAI, IJCAI, ECAI, KR, and JELIA. More than 50% of my journal publications have appeared in Q1 journals, and more than 65% in Q1 or Q2 journals.

--  Since 1997, I have led 10 scientific projects and participated as a senior researcher in 7 additional projects funded by institutions in Portugal, Argentina, Brazil, France, Germany, and the wider European region.

--  I have supervised 4 postdoctoral researchers, 6 doctoral theses, and 33 master's dissertations.

--  I have delivered more than 70 invited talks, keynote lectures, and tutorials at universities and international scientific events across Europe, the USA, Latin America, Africa, Asia, and Oceania. I have been invited as keynote speaker at conferences such as ECSQARU 2023, Cape-KR 2024, PRICAI 2019, and Brazilian Logic Conference 2017, and have delivered tutorials at IJCAI, ECAI, and KR.

--  I have held several academic leadership roles. I have served as Head of the Department of Informatics Engineering and Interactive Media Design (2016–2019, 2021–2022, and from 2025 onwards) and as Member of the General Council of the University of Madeira (2020–2024). I coordinate the Madeira Knowledge Representation and Reasoning Group.

--  I have been actively involved in the organisation of international scientific events. I am the founder of the BRAON workshop series (Belief Revision, Argumentation, Ontologies and Norms). I have served as Conference Chair of EPIA 2026, as organiser of JELIA 2014, and as co-organiser of events such as NMR 2018 and IBERAMIA 2018.

--  I serve on the editorial boards of journals including Argument and Computation, Journal of Applied Logics, CAAI Transactions on Intelligence Technology, and Inteligencia Artificial. Since 2023, I have been a member of the Advisory Committee of Principles of Knowledge Representation and Reasoning Incorporated (KR Inc.).

--  I have undertaken more than 50 research visits to institutions worldwide, collaborating with research groups in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Philosophy, and Economics.
